to affect areas hit by sandy. trends are off shore. things are looking nice as we approach the holidays next weekend. let's talk about what's happened out there. i mentioned that there was an amazing northern lights show going on. this is a picture from the top of mount washington. one of the highest spots in new england. 6,000 feet in new hampshire. there's a weather observatory where they do 24 hour weather observations and they have these amazing images of the northern lights. it was a great show from michigan all the way through vermont and maine. this image captured it well. as far as what's going on out there, not much. nice quiet weather period across the country. another chilly start in the 30s for many people, even the 40s in the deep south. it's a cold, dry air mass pretty much covering much of the nation. doesn't have a lot of tropical origins to it. it's a polar air mass. the only area of rain that we have is down here in the southeast. it's a pretty good solid shield of light rain, even lightening strikes from georgia into south carolina. now trying to go up to wilmington and ar

"nightly news" begins now. >>> good evening, a growing scandal that has already resulted in the resignation of the cia director has tonight already grown so vast and so complicated, it deserves diagramming as we begin tonight's coverage of it. this begins with retired four-star u.s. army general david petraeus. easily the most celebrated, best known general of the modern era. he resigned on friday, admitting to an affair. he was immediately linked to paula broadwell, like petraeus, she went to west point, an academic and a veteran who wrote a biography of petraeus. we know about the affair because of jill kelley, she alerted the fbi, said she was getting anonymous harassing e-mails, turns out they were from broadwell. kelley dealt with a lot of generals both in the military and socially in tampa. overnight we learned a

hurricane sandy hit shore in the northeast. crews are still working to restore power to 120,000 homes in new jersey. 4,000 residents are still living in shelters. fema has approved more than $450 million in assistance. in the meantime, governor andrew cuomo plans to ask the government for $30 billion in disaster aid. >>> the federal red cross says it has received $117 million in donations to help the victims of sandy. the agency also says its response has been near flawless. some residents in certain areas disagree with that. they say the help has been sporadic and very difficult to find. >> red cross hasn't offered any assistance until yesterday. they take people's hard working money to assist people, and when push comes to shove, they don't assist. >> i think we are near flawless in this operation. i'm just so proud of everything that we are doing on the ground. >> the red cross says sandy poses unique challenges. it's the first cold weather hurricane, and it struck in an extremely urban area. the agency maintains it has more than 5,700 volunteers in the region who have already handed out

"outfront" tonight, a risky affair. there are new questions about the affair that led cia director david petraeus to resign and when did he pose a national security threat. the affair came to light during an investigation of so-called jealous e-mails sent by paula broadwell to this woman in tampa. her name is jill kelley. tonight a u.s. official confirms to cnn that petraeus told broadwell to stop sending harassing e-mails to kelley. who is kelley? along with her husband, she's known petraeus and his family for more than five years. that couple met the four star general when he was stationed at medil air force base in tampa. now, what about the e-mails? what's in them? here's what we can tell you tonight. a description of the e-mails seems to validate what a friend of petraeus tells us, that petraeus felt broadwell had shown a possessiveness toward him. as to whether she gained any information during her relationship to p

sandy crashed ashore in the northeast. crews still working to restore power to 12000 homes and businesses in new york and new jersey. at least 4,000 displaced residents are still staying in shelters. fema has offered $450 million. governor cuomo plans to ask the federal government for $30 billion in disaster aid. the red cross says it's received $117 million in donations. they also say their response was been near flawless. some residents in hard hit areas disagree. they say the help has been minimal, sporadic, and very hard to find. >> we haven't seen red cross at all. red cross hasn't offered any assistance up until yesterday. they take people's hard working money to assist people, and when push comes to shove, they don't assist. >> i think that we are near flawless so far in this operation. i'm just so proud of everything that we are doing on the ground. >> the red cross says sandy creates unique challenges. it's a cold weather hurricane, and it struck in a highly populateded area. they have already handed out 5 million meals and snacks to people in need. >>> the veteran
